The benefits of ESG compliance
October 14, 2022

ESG has become an important consideration for policymakers in recent years. It is viewed as a way to improve business sustainability, foster corporate responsibility, reduce risk, and promote long-term value creation. Several other benefits have also been widely noted, including increased employee satisfaction, productivity, and reduced operating costs.

By complying with ESG regulation, businesses establish an initial framework for reporting their sustainability performance and measuring their ESG compliance risk factors. This allows them to demonstrate how they manage these risks and take steps towards mitigating them. Compliance officers play a crucial role in this process, as they can help ensure that companies meet the requirements set out by ESG laws, regulations and policies in order to protect the business and its reputation. To do this effectively, Compliance Officers must understand not just what is meant by ESG claims, but also where they apply within different industries as well as what these claims entail.

As an integral part of business strategy, ESG and its implementation is the responsibility of board members, directors, CEOs and senior management. While large businesses could afford to have dedicated teams to look after their ESG measures and benefit from them, small businesses can benefit from faster decision making, flexibility, and closer contact with their ecosystems in order to help them better understand their needs. Several studies have shown that companies with high ESG standards have a higher level of brand equity and are perceived to have better long-term prospects in terms of growth and profitability. ESG compliance helps to dramatically reduce the risk profile of a company, increasing its chances of success. Investing in socially responsible practices and policies can help create a compelling reputation for small, medium, and large businesses alike. Therefore, improving employee productivity, driving new business opportunities and saving costs.

The requirements for, and understanding of, ESG is ever-changing, and organisations learn more each day about the effect companies with a grounded ESG compliance approach have on broader society at large. Individual approaches are constantly evolving, as elements can quickly become outdated as sustainability understanding and best-practice evolves. As a relatively new structure, ESG has no widely accepted standards to calculate or communicate ESG ratings as of yet, making it difficult for companies to report on their ESG scores. ESG ratings evaluate a company’s environmental, social, and governance risk, while ESG scoring provides a numerical measure of how an organisation is perceived to be performing on a wide range of ESG issues. That being said, with the rate at which ESG compliance is growing, it is likely that these structures and standards will shortly become clear. However, it is important for businesses to be prepared for their own ESG journeys and evolve their own ESG ratings and reports for the foreseeable future.
